Opening Day at the South Carolina Legislature

Today marks the opening day of the South Carolina legislative session, and it begins with a serious and far-reaching challenge: statewide deregulation.

Every profession—without exception—is facing proposals that would reduce boards and commissions by 25%. This is not an isolated issue affecting one trade or one license category. It impacts all regulated professions across the state.

Boards and commissions exist to protect public health, safety, and consumer confidence. Reducing them by an arbitrary percentage, without regard to function, workload, or risk, threatens:

Professional standards and accountability
Consumer protection and public safety
Proper enforcement against unlicensed practice
The voice of licensed professionals in their own regulation

This session will require vigilance, education, and coordinated advocacy. We will be actively engaged at the State House, monitoring legislation, meeting with lawmakers, and pushing back against measures that weaken oversight under the banner of “efficiency.”

This is not the time for complacency.
This is the time to stand for regulation that protects the public and preserves professional integrity.

These activities are not harmless loopholes—they are professional services that involve client contact, sanitation, infection control, consumer protection, and liability. Allowing unlicensed individuals to perform them undermines:

Public health and safety
Professional standards and education
Enforcement against unlicensed practice
The livelihoods of licensed professionals who invested time, money, and training

We need clear, enforceable legislation that:

Affirms these services as part of regulated professions
Makes it illegal for unlicensed individuals to practice
Provides regulators with the authority to enforce the law consistently
Protects consumers from unsafe and untrained providers

Deregulation does not elevate a profession—it erodes it.
